AFRICA

DIGITALIZATION OF THE WORLD

Impact on individuals, society and economy

Huge amounts of money are currently being invested in research for artificial intelligence, around 60,000 thousand new technologies are already on the market. It goes faster and further - without being aware of the later consequences.

Starvation wages and poor health

In some parts of Africa, children as young as seven are working in life-threatening conditions to extract cobalt from Congo rock for electronic devices that global electronics companies use for their devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

“Agbogbloshie.” AFRICA, GHANA 2018

The electronic waste dump in Agbogbloshie is located in the district of the same name in the metropolis of Accra in West African Ghana.

Located north-west of Accra's CBD on the banks of the Korle Lagoon, it is home to 40,000 people on approximately 1600 hectares (16 km²) of land. The rubbish consists mainly of illegally imported electronic scrap originating from Europe. In the case of unorganized and completely improper separation of the recyclable materials - among other things with the help of open fires - highly toxic vapors are produced from the components. Due to this, the place is called one of the worst contaminated places in the world.

Purchase decisions that make an impact

Did you know that our consumer behavior has an enormous impact on people in less developed countries around the world?

If we don't consume more consciously in the future, millions of people will continue to be exploited and their habitats destroyed in a senseless manner.

No demand - no profit

We consumers have more power than we think we have. With our purchasing behavior we determine the direction in which we should go. With every conscious purchase, we send a clear signal and show manufacturers how important a fairer, social and ecological commitment is to us.
